MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS (MDGs)

The eight Millennium Development Goals were developed in the 1990s by all world countries as a blueprint to halve extreme world poverty, halt the spread of HIV/AIDS and provide universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015. The eight MDGs are:

• To halve extreme poverty and hunger
• To achieve universal primary education
• To promote gender equality
• To reduce under five mortality by two thirds
• To reduce maternal mortality by three quarters
• To reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis
• To ensure environmental sustainability
• To develop a global partnership for development with targets for aid, trade, and debt relief
