The Purpose of Government

__________________________

All political organizations have a purpose. The purpose of government is in its goals and objectives which the state must fulfill. There is thus a chain reaction: society creates the state and the state then should act to fulfill the goals of society! The people give the government power so that government can in turn empower the people to freely exercise their rights. Government, which is an instrument of the state, should formulate policies and programmes to promote the welfare of society.

To do this, government should commit its resources and energies to it. That becomes a moral issue, what I call Neo-morality or simply New-morality (discussed at length in the next chapter). It is morality that is practical; targeting poverty, unemployment, profiteering, and exploitation of the poor by the rich, and leading to economic equality. Policies may be politically made, but the implementation and delivery must be morally carried out in order to benefit the people.
